Even as she pulled away, Sorina could taste the kiss. She stared up at Peter’s face, still so new to her, yet as familiar as the back of her own hand.

What must he think of her, to kiss her after such a short acquaintance? Why, this was only the second time they’d been alone!

Why would he think she would allow it?

But had she? One minute he had been talking, and then it happened—just like that. As natural as breathing.

And as cataclysmic as two worlds colliding.

Now her body tingled with a new awareness. Like a breath of air to sleeping embers, the touch of his lips had ignited a flame within her that she’d never experienced before, nor even knew was possible.

“Well. . .” Peter let out an extended breath. “That was a surprise.”

At first his expression reflected her own wonderment, then swiftly changed to become his familiar beguiling smile.

Another young miss. Another thoughtless kiss.

Sorina stepped back, a tumult of emotions battling inside her. She turned away, fearful that he would witness the depth of her response to his sudden impulse.

He touched her shoulder, gently turning her toward him. “I’ve offended you again. It seems I never learn.”

“Oh, no,” she lied, struggling for calm and a cool smile, lest he think she’d made too much of it.

“I don’t know what happened,” Peter said. “All of a sudden you were so close, your lips so. . .so—”

“You need not to explain.” She started toward the door but he caught hold of her arm.

“I’m sorry if I offended you, Sorina. But I’d be lying if I said I was sorry I kissed you.”

From beneath lowered lashes, she chanced a peek at his face.

“Are you sorry?” His voice was as caressing as the kiss, and his great dark eyes were at once tender and questioning.

Could she trust what she saw in them? It would be foolish to read too much.

“You haven’t answered my question.”

“I cannot,” she whispered. “I am yet not sure.”

The expression on his face gave her the distinct and troubling impression that he was about to kiss her again. Desire melted into trepidation. She began backing toward the door. “Felice, I think, needs her dress,” she managed, then turned and ran from the room and down the stairs.

When Sorina hurtled through the kitchen door, Felice was sitting on the grass wrapped in a towel. Rebecca had just finished plaiting her shiny black hair into a single braid down her back.

“Finally.” Rebecca took the clothes from Sorina. She helped Felice put on the bloomers. “Now, let’s see how the dress looks,” she said, slipping the garment over the little girl’s head.

Sorina could hardly believe her eyes. From beneath the layers of dirt had emerged a truly lovely child. Huge ink-colored eyes glowed in her pale, heart-shaped face. Her nose was small and tilted, and her rosebud lips bloomed a delicate pink.

“Why, Felice, I do not recognize you,” Sorina said. “Beautiful you are.”

“And if I may add, Miss Felice, you look stunning in your new outfit,” Peter said, causing Sorina a disconcerting moment as he came up behind her.
